Introducing the Winter Training Camp: A New Skills Clinic for TFFL Players.

One of our top pieces of feedback over the years has been to run a program during the Winter. For the first time ever, we are excited to run a winter program.

We are proud to announce that on Tuesday nights at 6–7 PM from January to March, we will be organizing a Winter Training Camp for players of any gender born in 2007-2010. The program will take place at Downsview Park’s Hangar Dome.

The goal of this clinic is to teach players skills in a fun and positive atmosphere. Skill improvement is the goal, but an awesome time will be the outcome.

Responsible for teaching the skills clinic will be certified football coaches who have significant experience teaching both flag and tackle football skills.

Want to catch jump balls like Julio Jones? Take off down the sideline like Derrick Henry? or throw touchdowns on a dime like Lamar Jackson? Well we can’t promise that… but we can promise that your football skills will improve with us at Winter Training Camp!

Football at School: What could be better?

Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to support football players in the classroom and through extracurricular activities.

This year, we had the exciting opportunity to teach the wonderful game of flag football to students during gym class at The Sterling Hall School in Toronto. Students in grades four to eight buckled up their flags and took part in exciting flag football skills and drills. At the end of class, everyone had the chance to show off their skills in games against one another.

To remember their awesome afternoon, all students walked out of gym class with a Toronto Argonauts “Pull Together” rally towel.

We also had the opportunity to help out at the Toronto District School Board’s Flag Football tournament, where we gave out awesome t-shirts to participants at that event.

We are always excited and proud to see flag football players in schools across the city. Flag football builds teamwork, organization, time management, and other skills… but most importantly, it builds friendships that last a lifetime.

We have some more school visits in the works for this season, including our annual day assisting at the Toronto Jewish Day School Flag Football Tournament.

If you are interested in having the TFFL visit your school, email us at info@torontoflagfootball.com.

Inaugural Argos Cup a Huge success

The Toronto Flag Football League sent 3 teams to the Argos Cup, with one of those teams making it all the way to the finals. Although they came up short on the scoreboard everyone went home winners after a great experience many great memories.

The 8:30 start time and chilly weather were no obstacles for the staff or participants of the event as there were smiles everywhere and an overall positive attitude all day long.

Argos Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson coaching a team during their game.

With Argos legends Damon Allen, Matt Black and current Argonauts quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson all making appearances throughout the day to help coach teams and keep team spirits high. Each participant received warm drinks, lunch and went home with an Argos prize pack!

We want to thank all of the people that made this possible and keep an eye out for more great events like this one in your emails and on our website!

On The Field with the Argonauts and an exciting TFFL Week 4!

Hi Toronto Flag Footballers!

What an exciting week of football we had this weekend!

Finally…we were back outdoors on Sunday at Fieldstone and Northview Secondary School for our youth leagues, and both our Adult divisions and our NFL division had jam packed weekends making up for postponed games.

Let’s all hope that the weather holds out for our JCC Chai players, who have regularly scheduled games on Tuesday, and makeup games on Wednesday at Westmount Collegiate Institute.

ON THE FIELD WITH THE ARGONAUTS

On Thursday, some of our TFFL players had the opportunity to take in some CFL action, as the Montreal Alouettes visited Toronto for the first game of the pre-season.

At halftime, our TFFL players had the opportunity to play a mini-game in front of nearly 5000 fans!

We even got a visit from Friend of the League, James Wilder Jr., who was kind enough to pump up the players before they hit the field!

Bonus: The Argonauts won the game, and look great heading into their next pre-season game.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Pandas, 21 – Marauders, 7

This week’s Game of The Week comes from our “Lower Girls” division, where the Pandas defeated the Marauders in a well contested game.

The game opened with Hannah A. returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown to give the Pandas a 7-0 lead.

Touchdowns from Hannah A. to Leah C., and Josie M. to Beatrice L. gave the Pandas a 21-0 lead, but the determined Marauders tried to claw back before the half.

Roxy W. found Maddie G. near the end of the half to cut the lead to 21-7 and giving new life to the Marauders going into the second half.

However, in the second half both teams played tight, outstanding defence, leading to a scoreless finish, and a game that ended 21-7 for the Pandas.

The Marauders, however, kept their eyes on the real prize… enjoying Timbits with their coaches following the game.

“To excel at flag football, you only have to remember the five F’s,” said Marauder’s coach Amy T., “Football. Flags. Fun. Friendship…and Food.”

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Viggo J., Ravens #45, Junior Division

At the TFFL, we try to spread the love around to all of our age groups, teams, and divisions. It would usually take something really special for two players from the same team to be named Player of the Week in the same season.

I think we can all agree that this catch is something special.

Wow.

Spring 2019 - Week 3 Update

Hey Toronto Flag Footballers!

This week was another difficult one for field conditions across the city.

Our Saturday games progressed as usual at North York Civic Soccer Fields, but the storms over the weekend led to Fieldstone’s games being moved at the last minute to the Downsview Park Soccer Dome.

All of our Sunday games were played with some fantastic finishes and lots of fun for all!

We didn’t have quite the same luck trying to move our Tuesday night JCC Chai division after the permits were canceled, but we will make up all JCC Chai missed games with sessions on Wednesdays June 5 and June 12 at Westmount Collegiate Institute.

Thank you to all of our players and families for being so understanding about some of the last minute changes this season.

We will always do our best to make sure that our games can be played, and strive to do everything in our power to make sure that all of our players have the flag football experience they deserve!

Let’s all hope the weather holds out for the rest of the season!

Now on to football…

GAME OF THE WEEK

49ers, 28 – Ravens, 27

The first half saw the 49ers open up a 14-0 lead early thanks to touchdowns by Zachary S. and Hamish E.

The Niners and Ravens then exchanged touchdowns, before Ravens’ QB Brett A. found Damon K. in the end zone for a 10-yard strike on the last play of the first half, cutting the halftime lead to 21-14.

Both defences stood tall in the second half, and the Niners took a 28-21 lead into the final five plays.

The Ravens were looking for magic—and they got it, thanks to another Brett A. touchdown, this time on the receiving end of a pass from Hudson D.

The Ravens could have elected to end the game tied at 28, but chose to try a two-point conversion to win the game. However, fantastic defence from the 49ers thwarted the Ravens’ two-point attempt, and ended their comeback hopes.

You can’t help but notice many parallels between this game and the 2013 Super Bowl!

  • Ravens vs. 49ers
  • Played in a dome
  • Both games ended on a goal-line stop
  • Beyoncé performing at half-time

But this time… It was the 49ers who got the last laugh!

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

David K., Rams #29, Sophomore Division

This week’s Player of the Week is David K. of the Rams!

David threw four touchdowns this weekend across two games, both of which were Rams victories!

By the end of the season, there is no doubt that we’ll be thinking of David as one of the greatest players to ever wear the Rams uniform.

Dickerson. Warner. Faulk. Gurley.

David.
