CYJFL with Canadian Young Judaea

While the TFFL season was on hiatus for the Victoria Day Weekend, Canadian Young Judaea invited our referees to officiate that their CYJFL charity football tournament!

Entry fees and fundraising for the event went towards Canadian Young Judaea’s Camper Scholarship Fund, which provides new opportunities for individuals to experience summer camp!

The tournament was fantastic, the weather held off, and there was even a hot dog lunch!

Thanks for having us CYJ! We can’t wait to work with you again in the future.

If you or your school, camp, or organization are interested in hosting a flag football tournament, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us for our expertise and assistance with providing referees, booking space, and scheduling the event!

Spring 2019 - Week 2 Update

Week Two of Spring 2019 came and went, and unfortunately, the week passed with all of our outdoor games cancelled/postponed.

Fortunately, we were able to secure some indoor space at Downsview Park to allow our Sunday teams the opportunity to play flag football this weekend!

We apologize to all of our Saturday and Tuesday players, and will do our best to reschedule the games!

Going forward – let’s all cross our fingers for some sunshine and warm weather so that we can be back at Fieldstone, North York Civic Fields, Northview Secondary School, and Woodvalley Field after the long weekend!

Player of The Week

Nathan L., Cardinals #71, Junior Division

This week’s TFFL Player of the Week is Nathan L. of the Cardinals!

Nathan did his best Kyler Murray impression, by throwing for 112 yards and 4 touchdowns, and added 6 flag pulls on defence in his team’s victory over the Giants.

Great job this week, Nathan!

TFFL Players Bond with Argonauts Running Back James Wilder, Jr. at Skills Clinic

Last night, 40 boys and girls from the Toronto Flag Football Spring League joined Argonauts Running Back James Wilder, Jr. for an evening of skills training and fun.

Wilder, who won the Grey Cup and Rookie of the Year in 2017 with the Argonauts, led the session with the help of our TFFL Staff Team.

The participants participated in exciting drills that taught passing, catching, flag pulling, rushing, and defence, which they will be sure to show off on the field on Sundays and Tuesdays!

The evening culminated in the final drill, called 1v1’s, where two champions were crowned and surprised with tickets and field passes to the Argonauts home opener on June 22 vs. the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Thank you James for an exciting evening! We are excited to work with you again in the future!

A Day at the Jewish Day School Tournament

The flag football season started a couple weeks early for some of our Toronto Flag Football staff. We sent four referees to the annual Toronto Jewish Day School Boys Flag Football Tournament.

The tournament took place at The Hangar at Downsview Park and was played using modified TFFL rules.

It was exciting to see so many of our Toronto Flag Football players represent their elementary schools in what we can only imagine was warm up for the Spring TFFL season!

There were fantastic catches, flag pulls, teamwork and sportsmanship on display all day. Even though all games were exciting, nothing can surpass the championship game, which went to overtime, and saw the Netivot HaTorah Day School Panthers prevail over the Leo Baeck North team.

Congratulations Netivot!

Our staff are always excited to help at school tournaments/events. If you are interested in having our TFFL referees or staff at your event, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

TFFL Spotlight: Girls Division

Hi! I’m Casey, one of Toronto Flag Football’s Girls League Convenors. In honour of International Women’s Day, I decided to put a spotlight on our Girls League and show off what this division has to offer.

In the grand scheme of things, football is new territory for girls. For a while, the only stories you heard about girls in football was the odd U.S. high school student who would play on her school’s team.

That was not nearly enough. There is an appetite for football amongst girls and for a long time, there was nothing to curb our hunger.

Girl turns the corner and is going to score a touchdown!
Toronto Flag Football’s Girls Division provides exciting flag football for girls from ages 9-16.

TFFL started its Girls Division in Spring 2016 with 17 dedicated players excited to play the sport they love, and dedicate to push the boundaries about who is supposed to play football.

Since that first season, our girls league has flourish, growing exponentially year-over-year. Starting this Spring, we are excited for our Girls Division to expand to a two-hour schedule; consistent with the schedules of our co-ed youth and adult leagues.

We are passionate about growing our girls league and promoting a healthy lifestyle amongst girls across the city. Studies have shown that more than 40% of girls in Canada don’t play organized sports, and only 8% meet Canada’s physical activity guidelines. We want to empower girls to choose an active lifestyle through the sport they love, and one that can teach them both sport-specific and interpersonal skills that culminate in lifelong success.

Each week at the field, it is undeniable how passionate our girls are about the sport. Whether it is making a diving catch for a touchdown, gaining the confidence to call their own plays in the huddle, or building lasting friendships on the field that flourish off of it, the growth in our players over the course of the season is clearly visible. Oh…and they have a fantastic time playing, too!

girls cheering after a big victory.
TFFL builds friendship, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

We know that there is still room to grow and we are only getting started.

And we can’t wait.

Toronto Flag Football Announces New Partnership with the Toronto Argonauts

We are excited to share the announcement of a development-focused partnership with the Toronto Argonauts, as part of the club’s commitment to growing amateur football in Toronto.

We were building to it for a while with a website update, logo change, and a few other hints along the way.

This is an excellent initiative that encourages kids to get on the field and experience the great game of football.
Randy Ambrosie, Canadian Football Commissioner, on our exciting new partnership!

What does this mean for the TFFL experience?

It is now, as it was before: All about our dedicated players.

Aside from a cool new logo and colour scheme inspired by our new partners, our new partnership will have a positive impact on the overall TFFL experience, bringing the best that flag football has to offer to the Greater Toronto Area. Starting in Spring 2019, our players will get:

  • Brand new Argonauts-branded jerseys.
  • Regular Argos player and alumni appearances at the field.
  • Football clinics for participants to learn on-field skills.
  • Clinics for coaches in alignment with Huddle Up, the Argonauts’ signature anti-bullying program.

We’re so excited to work with the Argonauts to help us provide an amazing experience for all of our players, both returning and new faces, and get footballs (and flags) in kids hands.

We Started A Blog.

Hello and welcome to the brand new Toronto Flag Football League Blog!

When our league was founded in 2002, we ran a GeoCities website with poor flash animation and standings that were updated by hand.

We had no intentions of starting a blog. And why would we?

At that time, we got all our sports news from the newspaper and the weeks-old Sports Illustrated magazines that we kept in the bathroom.

Girl is about to score a touchdown on a running play.
She’s going to score a touchdown – and then she’s going to read the blog.

Flash Forward 17 Years.

Toronto Flag Football League is proudly the #1 Flag Football Experience in the GTA, offering leagues for players of all ages, sizes, skill-levels and genders.

We have incredible uniforms for our players, great giveaways, stats that are updated in real-time, and so much more. But we don’t have a blog.

That All Changes Today.

Going forward on our blog, you can expect:

Whether it is on the field, on social media, this blog, or at community events, we can’t wait to bring you the best flag football experience that this city has to offer.

And we’re just getting started.
